So you bought a new pistol with an RMR cut and you’re looking at a flooded market full of red dots. Most folks are looking for reliability, feature packed and affordable. Typically you’ll only find two out of the three, until now!
Introducing the Olight Osight! This new red dot designed by Olight is feature packed, durable, and priced extremely competitively! A fantastic choice for a law enforcement officer for duty use, a security officer, someone interested in concealed carrying, or even a competition shooter interested in speeding up their shots and reducing split times.
Innovative Features and Performance
Inside the box, you’ll find the Osight, a charging cover (I’ll go into detail on this awesome feature), a USB-c charging cable, a cleaning cloth, instillation tool, a storage pouch for accessories, as well as multiple sizes of screws to fit most common slide thread pitches.
Diving into the red dot is where the real excitement comes. The red dot incorporates industry-standard mounting footprint. The OSight also features an extremely fast shake awake function so as soon as the unit is moved, the red dot will be activated. This red dot also uses an extremely crisp 3 MOA dot and works excellently as a general purpose dot. It’s large enough to take quick shots under fire, but it’s crisp enough to take precision shots at longer distances. The window is huge compared to most other red dots on the market and utilizes some of the best glass I’ve seen on any pistol red dot. The window size is 24mm x 21.5mm, dwarfing most other red dots on the market. The glass clarity is superb with almost no tint providing a large unobstructed view of your target!
Durability is something you won’t have to worry about with this red dot. It’s built out of 7076-T6 so it can take some serious blows and still maintain zero. This red dot is also IPX6 waterproof so you can focus on the task at hand and not worry about if water will damage your optics.
Additional features included on this dot is where it really shines above the competition. This red dot features a small led light mounted between the buttons. This LED indicator is used to show the battery percentage of the red dot. It will show green if the battery is higher than 50%, yellow if between 50%- 20%, red if 20%-10% and will blink red if lower than 10%. In a self defense situation in darkness, you don’t want to give your position away. So this LED will only illuminate if one of the buttons is pressed. The LED will go off after a few seconds. This Red dot also features a light sensor on the front of the red dot. This sensor can be used to auto adjust the red dot brightness without having to fiddle with settings. Example: something goes bump in your house at night. Your house is pitch black so the red dot is in a low setting to prevent from washing out a potential target. If you turn on a weapon mounted light or even flip a light switch, the sensor will immediately increase the brightness to be visible instead of fumbling with switches or buttons.
This red dot also incorporates some industry firsts which are absolute game changers. This red dot comes with a rechargeable hood. Gone are the days of swapping batteries, trying to remember to order them, wondering how long the battery will last or when the last time you changed the battery was. This charger is like a crock pot, just set it and forget it! All you’ll need to do is slide the charging hood over top of the red dot, and it will magnetize to the red dot itself. Located on top of the charging hood is a nifty LED indicator in a ring pattern showing how much battery is left on the charging hood. This is also used to show the battery percentage of the red dot when installed onto the red dot itself. To display the battery percentage of the hood, simply press the button located on the side of the hood, and the LED ring will illuminate displaying the battery level.
When the charging hood battery starts to get low, just simply plug in the supplied USB-C cable and charging will be compete in about 3 hours if fully depleted. Another feature id like to touch on is the battery life of the red dot and charging hood combination. On a single charge, the optic itself can last over 70,000 hours on its lowest mode. Even at its brightest setting, it can continuously run for over 17 days and this duration can be extended to over 70 days with the support of a fully charged charging cover. That’s absolutely incredible and one of my favorite features of this product. I now keep an extra charging hood in my vehicle, range bag, and in my gun safe to ensure my batteries are always topped off and ready to use in a moments notice.
Next I’ll go over some general instructions for the charging hood. The red dot comes off and will need to be charged. To do this, just plug the included USB-C cable into the charging hood and place the hood over top of the red dot. If the cover or red dot are charging, the small battery icon will be blinking. If fully charged, the battery icon will be in a constant on state. When the charging hood is unplugged, just press the side button and the ring indicator will display its current battery level. When mounted to the red dot, clicking the side button on the hood will show the red dots battery percentage.
Conclusion
Lastly I’ll review some operation instructions. Once fully charged, you can click either button to turn the red dot on. The red dot comes in an auto off setting, this will turn the red dot off once it stops sensing motion after 10 minutes. To change this setting, double click and hold the “-“ button for 3 seconds. If you’d like to turn the OSight off, press both the “+” and “-“ button simultaneously for more than .5 seconds. To change between manual mode, lockout mode, or auto light sensing mode, press and hold the “+” button for more than 3 seconds. This will allow the user to select their desired mode.
Stay safe and happy shooting!
