A Rechargeable WML with Olight's New Rail Mounting System

Olight first introduced us to their new “rail mounting” system last year with the introduction of the Valkyrie PL-3. With an adjustable sliding block, this compact weapon-mounted light could be adapted to a much wider variety of weapons. It is powered by two replaceable CR123A batteries and has a maximum output of 1,300 lumens. As the successor to the very popular PL-2, the PL-3 comes with a modest upgrade in performance and maintains the same overall dimensions, keeping it relatively compact. The most impressive upgrade though is the industry-leading adjustable key-block. With three different positions, the key-block can be adapted to your specific weapon and then locked securely into place using the set screw. This gives the user a much more secure fit as well as an improved overall experience.

For those who prefer Oligh's magnetic charging cable system (MCC) to replaceable batteries, you are in luck because Olight is releasing a new and improved version of the PL-3, the PL-3R! But this isn't simply updating the PL-3 to be rechargeable. The new PL-3R comes with performance improvements as well.

Performance of the Valkyrie PL-3R

The PL-3R gets a nice boost in performance over the PL-3, going from 1,300 lumens to 1,500 lumens. This puts it on par with the performance of the PL-Pro's max lumen output of 1,500 as well. The runtime on high also gets a boost when compared to both the PL-3 and PL-Pro, going from 1.5 minutes to 2 minutes before stepping down. The PL-3R steps down from 1,500 lumens to 600 lumens like the PL-Pro and remains there for 36 minutes before stepping down a third and final time to 300 lumens of output.

Another improvement over both the PL-3 and PL-Pro is the addition of a secondary high setting. Both the PL-3 and PL-Pro have 2 modes, high and low, whereas the PL-3R now includes a third mode, high 2. The secondary high setting for the PL-3R is 1,000 lumens. The benefit of this mode is the massive increase in runtime, a whopping 12 minutes of continuous room-clearing illumination! After 12 minutes at 1,000 lumens, the PL-3R steps down to 600 lumens for an additional 23 minutes.

Perhaps the most welcome improvement over the PL-3 is that the PL-3R will now remember the High 1 or High 2 setting. Being able to grab your weapon and activate the light immediately on the last setting used is an important feature should you need it in a high-pressure situation.

Compatible with Long and Short Builds

PL-3R Valkyrie is compatible with almost all short-build rails, thanks to the included 1913 and GL adapters. it's also compatible with Picatinny railed long-range builds, as the PL-3R Valkyrie magnetic charging port can be magnetically connected to a remote pressure switch (not included).

Conclusion

The Valkyrie PL-3R is a great upgrade to the PL-3 and the PL-Pro. With the outstanding adjustable rail mount, it can fit a wide range of weapons. Once locked in place with the set screw, it fits securely with no movement, even under the most extreme use scenarios. While the magnetic charging cable system may not appeal to everyone, it is a welcome option for those that prefer being able to quickly and easily recharge the light without having to remove it from their weapon. The use of the lithium polymer battery also reduces the overall weight by a little over 10%. Couple these improvements with a boost in output and runtimes, in addition to being able to remember being left in the “high” mode, and you have a fantastic weapon mounted light that is sure to exceed your expectations.
